Top Health Concerns for Seniors – Aging isn’t what it used to be. As the baby-boom generation ages and Americans live longer, it’s getting easier to find quality geriatric health care. However, seniors are still likely to spend more time thinking about their health than are other cohorts. Preventing and treating common health complaints becomes part of your routine as you get older. These are some of the most common health problems for people over age 65.
- Arthritis. Inflammation in the joints causes pain for nearly half of all adults over age 65. It’s most common in smokers and people who are overweight. While it’s difficult for people with arthritis to exercise, exercise is the best way to minimize your symptoms, so talk to your doctor about creating an exercise routine that works for you.
- Cognitive decline. It’s normal for people over a certain age to have trouble remembering things from time to time, simply because they’ve lived a long time and have a lot of memories. However, if you find yourself forgetting things that you need to know every day, it could be a sign of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, conditions that affect about 1 in 9 seniors. Talk to your doctor.
- Heart trouble. In people over 65, heart disease is the top cause of death. Keeping an eye on your blood pressure and cholesterol is essential. Diet and exercise are the best ways to keep your heart in good condition.
- Balance problems. The leading cause of injury in seniors is falls. Don’t be too proud to use whatever mobility assistance you need, whether it’s a cane, a shower rail or something else. Staying in shape is a good way to work on your balance, so talk to your doctor about developing a low-impact exercise plan.
- Osteoporosis. One reason falls are so dangerous for seniors is because 50 million people over age 50 suffer from low bone density. Eating a healthy diet and taking calcium supplements can prevent this.
- Cancer. After heart disease, cancer is the second-leading cause of death in seniors. That’s why it’s important to complete all recommended cancer screenings on schedule, especially if you have a family history of cancer.
Seniors deal with different health concerns than do younger people, and generally have to spend more time and energy on their health. However, knowing the common health concerns for people over age 65 is a good way to stay on top of one’s well-being. Regular contact with qualified medical professionals is the best way to keep healthy as you age.
